Vineyard and terroir
The grapes come from San Felice in Castelnuovo Berardenga, Siena. Merlot and Pugnitello are planted in medium-textured soils dominated by calcareous marl formed through the breakdown of alberese and galestro limestone, with plentiful gravel and pebbles. Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot grow in silty-sandy soils of Pliocene origin. The vines are trained to spur-pruned cordon and Guyot.
Grapes
Pugnitello, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot. The inclusion of Pugnitello, an old native variety revived by San Felice, reinforces the wine’s Tuscan identity.
Vinification
Merlot is picked in the first week of September. Cabernet Sauvignon, Pugnitello and Petit Verdot are harvested in the first week of October. Fermentation and maceration on the skins last 20–25 days at 30°C, followed by malolactic fermentation.
Ageing
The wine matures for 24 months in 225-litre French oak barriques and then ages for eight months in bottle.
Technical data
The 2021 has 13.5% alcohol, total acidity of 6.0 g/L and less than 0.5 g/L residual sugar. Production is 30,000 bottles. Formats are 750 mL, 1.5 L and 3 L, with a stated cellaring potential of 20 years.
Tasting profile
Dense ruby with garnet highlights. Redcurrant, sweet spices and pungent underbrush shape the aroma. The palate is warm and rich, with expressive tannins and smooth vanilla nuances.
Serving and pairing
Serve at 18°C. Pair with grilled or roasted dishes, particularly game and lamb, or with aged cheeses.
Vintage notes
The 2021 season followed a regular pattern. Spring rain supported vegetative growth and built water reserves for summer, although below-average temperatures after Easter briefly slowed bud growth. Fungal disease pressure was absent. Summer was mostly dry, with steady temperatures and marked day-to-night variation supporting ripening. The harvest was in line with preceding years and delivered healthy, high-quality grapes.
Label / history
First produced in 1968, Vigorello preceded the generation of Tuscan wines that later became known as Supertuscans.
