Vineyard and terroir

The vineyards are at San Felice in Castelnuovo Berardenga, Siena. Their medium-textured soils are predominantly calcareous marl formed from alberese and galestro limestone, with abundant gravel and pebbles; some areas extend into soils rich in silt and sand. The vines are trained to Guyot and spur-pruned cordon.

Grapes

Mainly Sangiovese and produced entirely from native grape varieties.

Vinification

Harvest runs from the second week of September through the first week of October. Fermentation and maceration on the skins last 8–10 days at 28–30°C. Malolactic fermentation takes place in stainless steel.

Ageing

Maturation lasts 10–12 months in large Slavonian oak casks, followed by two months in bottle.

Technical data

The 2022 has 13% alcohol, total acidity of 6.0 g/L and less than 0.5 g/L residual sugar. Production is 500,000 bottles. Available formats are 375 mL, 750 mL, 1.5 L and 5 L. Cellaring potential is 5–6 years.

Tasting profile

Luminous ruby red. Aromas evoke cherry, raspberry and sweet violets. The palate is dry and medium-bodied, with subtle tannins and fresh, crisp acidity; the overall style emphasizes elegance and drinkability.

Serving and pairing

Serve at 18°C. Suitable pairings include antipasti, richly flavoured first courses and most red meats.

Vintage notes

The 2022 growing season benefited from favourable conditions. No spring frost or hail damaged the buds, while spring rain supplied water reserves for the drier months. Summer temperatures remained consistent without extreme peaks, and rain in mid-August moderated conditions and provided additional water during ripening. Warm weather and moderate humidity kept the clusters healthy. Harvest began slightly early, around 10 September, and ended about a month later. The resulting Chianti Classico wines show balance, moderate acidity and soft, ripe tannins.
