Vineyard and terroir
Poggio Rosso comes from rigorous selection within the namesake single vineyard, an approximately two-hectare parcel overlooking the San Felice estate village in Castelnuovo Berardenga, Siena. Selected Sangiovese clones were established in the Poggio Rosso area from the late 1970s.
At approximately 400 metres above sea level, the vineyard occupies a bright, well-ventilated hillside. Its medium-textured, stony soils have a calcareous-marl origin and derive from alberese and galestro. These formations encourage deep rooting, restrain vigor and promote concentration and structure. Compact alberese limestone contributes freshness, elegance and mineral character, while argillaceous galestro schist adds structure, tension and energy. Vines are trained to spur-pruned cordon.
Grapes

Serving and pairing
Serve at 18 °C.
Vintage notes
The 2021 season followed a regular pattern. Spring rain supported vegetative growth and replenished water reserves for the dry summer. A brief cool period after Easter slowed shoot growth in cooler parts of Chianti Classico without creating significant fungal-disease pressure. Summer remained dry but avoided excessive heat waves. From late August, warm days and cool nights encouraged optimal grape ripening.
Label / history
First produced in 1978 as an expression of a particularly well-suited single vineyard, Poggio Rosso became a Gran Selezione in 2011. It is made in limited quantities and only in outstanding vintages.
