Vineyard and terroir

The Sangiovese comes from estate vineyards in southwestern Montalcino at 500 m above sea level. The vines used for the 2020 release were approximately 25 years old, with yields of 35–60 quintals per hectare (3.5–6 t/ha). The wine is certified organic.

Grapes

100% Sangiovese, selected from the estate’s best fruit.

Vinification

Maceration lasts 25 days. Fermentation takes place in stainless-steel tanks under controlled temperature.

Ageing

The 2020 vintage matured for approximately three years in large oak casks of 30–35 hL. After bottling, the wine rested for another four months before release.

Technical data

The 2020 wine has 14% alcohol, 0 g/L residual sugar and 51 mg/L total sulphur. Production comprised 10,470 bottles of 750 mL and 165 magnums of 1.5 L.

Tasting profile

Deep garnet red. The generous bouquet combines dried flowers, spices and ripe fruit. The palate is immediately appealing, with good structure, finely extracted tannins and a long finish. Its elegance and intensity are intended to unfold with time, producing a complex aromatic profile after five years.

Vintage notes

The 2020 season began with a mild, dry winter and an unusually warm March that prompted early budding. A cold spell in early April, including light snow and three sub-zero mornings, damaged almost half the buds and sharply reduced the crop. Warm, rainy conditions in April and May helped the vines recover, with flowering beginning in early June. Summer was relatively dry without excessive heat; véraison ran from late July to around 20 August. Heavy rain in early September was followed by warm, dry weather that supported excellent ripening. Harvest took place on 28–29 September, the estate’s first September harvest. The resulting wines combined good acidity and structure with alcohol below the level of recent years; the vintage is compared with 2004.
