Vineyard and terroir
Piastraia draws on Torre, Poderini, Vignanova, I Castagni and Campastrello. Its origins lie in a vineyard planted in 1991 to combine the established performance of Bordeaux varieties in Bolgheri with Sangiovese’s Tuscan character and Syrah’s Mediterranean dimension.
Grapes
The current blend comprises Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot; exact proportions are not stated. Syrah was removed beginning with the 2019 vintage, while Sangiovese was removed from the 2023 harvest onward.
Vinification
Harvest extends from early September for Merlot to late September. Each variety ferments separately with spontaneous yeasts in 30 hl truncated-conical cement vats. Two to three days of open pump-overs are followed by one closed pump-over per day. Extraction at the height of fermentation and the duration of post-fermentation maceration are adjusted to the grapes’ potential. Frequent tastings determine the moment of racking, generally after about 20 days, while maceration can extend to 20–25 days. Malolactic fermentation takes place in wood and cement; after racking, the wine goes directly into barriques to complete this stage.
Ageing
Maturation lasts 12–18 months in French oak barriques, of which 40% are new.
Vintage notes
The composition has evolved materially. Syrah was phased out with the 2019 vintage, followed by Sangiovese from the 2023 harvest. The present expression is therefore based on Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot.
Tasting profile
The current style is conceived around harmony among Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot.
Serving and pairing
The stated ageing potential is 20 years.
Label / history
The original mixed vineyard was planted in 1991. Piastraia was the first wine in the area to use the Bolgheri Rosso designation. Beginning in 2012, it became Bolgheri Rosso Superiore after the vines had attained sufficient age to express greater complexity.
