Vineyard and terroir

The grapes come from the I Bricchi estate on the boundary between Castel Rocchero and Acqui Terme. The technical sheet identifies a 1.4 ha vineyard in the municipality of Acqui Terme, at coordinates 44.706953, 8.420832. It records an altitude of 350 m and a South-West to South-East exposure. The vines were planted in 1987 on light-coloured soils containing substantial sand and clay.

Grapes

An indigenous Piedmontese variety.

Vinification

The must macerates on the skins for 12 days in stainless-steel tanks, with two manual pump-overs each day. Following alcoholic fermentation, the wine is racked into stainless-steel tanks, where malolactic fermentation is completed.

Ageing

The wine matures for 20 months in stainless-steel tanks before bottling.

Technical data

The wine is packaged in a 0.75 L Bordeaux bottle embossed with the Scarpa logo. Its stated longevity exceeds 15 years.

Tasting profile

Deep ruby red. The bouquet combines floral tones of iris and geranium with black pepper and a light touch of nutmeg. The palate is medium-bodied and well structured, with fine tannins, good acidity and a long finish recalling spices and violets.

Serving and pairing

Pair with Gorgonzola and other blue or mature cheeses, umami-rich foods, dark meats, spicy Thai dishes, balsamic vinegar, duck-leg confit, turkey with dried fruit, Indian chicken curry or jam tart.
