Vineyard and terroir

Riserva Pian di Conte is made only in exceptional vintages from a meticulous selection of Sangiovese grown in the estate’s oldest vineyards around the winery, at 400 m above sea level. For the 2020 release, the vines were 30–40 years old, trained to spurred cordon and planted at 5,400 vines per hectare. The general description places the vineyards on a south-eastern exposure and describes sandy-loam soils rich in heavy stones; the 2020 sheet instead records a south-western exposure and sandy topsoil.

Grapes

100% Sangiovese.

Vinification

Temperature-controlled maceration and alcoholic fermentation take place in stainless-steel tanks at 28–29°C.

Ageing

The wine matures for at least 24 months in 15–25 hL Slavonian oak barrels, followed by several months in bottle before release. The 2020 technical data specifies that 50% spends 24 months in these barrels without identifying the maturation vessel or regime for the other half.

Technical data

The 2020 vintage has 14.5% alcohol. Available formats are 0.75 L, 1.5 L, 3 L and 5 L.

Tasting profile

Deep, intense red. The bouquet is fresh and complex, combining ripe plum, cherry, blackberry and raspberry with age-derived notes of chocolate, tobacco and liquorice. The palate is powerful and well structured yet balanced and smooth, finishing on sweet, elegant tannins.

Serving and pairing

Serve at 18°C with red meat, game, meat sauces or wild boar.
