Vineyard and terroir

Vigna Terrabianca is a one-hectare cru in Radda in Chianti, within Chianti Classico. The vineyard stands at 378 m above sea level and was planted more than 40 years ago. Its Sangiovese belongs to the T19 clonal selection, originating in Emilia-Romagna, and is grafted onto 420A rootstock. The vines are spur-cordon trained.

The vineyard has loam soil with a high proportion of rocks. The Terrabianca estate occupies a south-facing natural valley at the foot of the northern hill of Vagliagli. Its fresh soils combine marl, clay and stone, while 121 hectares of surrounding woodland contribute to a microclimate marked by light, warmth and pronounced temperature variation.

Grapes

100% Sangiovese from Vigna Terrabianca, clonal selection T19.

Vinification

Fermentation takes place in stainless-steel tanks at controlled temperature. Post-fermentation maceration on the skins lasts 15–20 days.

Ageing

The wine matures for 20 months in medium-toasted, 5 hl French-oak tonneaux, using a combination of new and used vessels. This is followed by 12 months of bottle ageing.

Technical data

The 2021 vintage contains 14.5% alcohol by volume, with an alternative listing of 14% vol. It is bottled in a 0.75 L format and packed in six-bottle wooden cases.

Tasting profile

The 2021 is an intense ruby red. Light citrus accents frame sour-cherry aromas, followed by nuances of black pepper, cloves, peppermint and liquorice. The palate is broad and persistent, structured by dense yet elegant tannins. Its acid backbone contributes balance and longevity.

Serving and pairing

Pair with game or roasted meat.

Vintage notes

The 2021 growing season began with budbreak at the customary time, followed by unusually cold days and occasional sub-zero temperatures. Cold damage affected valley floors and the earliest-ripening varieties. Spring and summer then proceeded regularly, without pronounced heat peaks. A low crop load helped the vines withstand limited rainfall, while gradual ripening delivered grapes with technological and phenolic maturity associated with a particularly successful harvest.

Label / history

The Gran Selezione is produced in limited quantities from a long-established single-vineyard Sangiovese planting whose position and exposure create distinctive climatic conditions.
