Vineyard and terroir
Redigaffi comes from Merlot vines planted in 1988 in Alta Maremma, within the Colline Metallifere area. Planting density is 8,500 vines per hectare, with spur-pruned cordon training and integrated pest management. The clay soils contain a medium-high proportion of stones and are rich in minerals and pink marble, a basic rock present in the estate's soils.
Grapes
100% Merlot.
Vinification
The grapes are harvested by hand into 10 kg crates during the second and third weeks of September. Temperature-controlled fermentation takes place in stainless steel for 10 days, followed by 25 days of post-fermentation maceration.
Ageing
The wine matures for 18–20 months in first-use French oak barriques. It is bottled in summer and rests for several months before release.
Technical data
Average production is 15,000 bottles.
Tasting profile
Bright ruby red. The nose combines crisp red fruit with balsamic nuances, spice, cumin, tobacco and freshly worked leather. The palate is balanced, with an elegant tannic weave and notes of tobacco and liquorice. The finish is long and persistent.
Serving and pairing
Serve at 15–18°C with red meat dishes, roasts, grilled meats, game or aged cheeses.
Label / history
The name comes from a small stream flowing near the property. In 1994, founders Rita and Virgilio set aside two barriques of Merlot, creating the first vintage. Redigaffi subsequently became the first Italian wine to receive a 100/100 score from Robert Parker.
