Questo vino
Vineyard and terroir
The wine comes from the Vigne a Porrona estate near Cinigiano in the Province of Grosseto, about 2 km southeast of Montalcino. The vineyards stand at 350 m a.s.l. on the gentle slopes below Monte Amiata, a few kilometres from the Tyrrhenian Sea. The soil is medium-textured clay rich in stones, and the vines are trained to a low spur-pruned cordon. The current specification gives a planting density of 5,000 vines/ha; the 2019 technical sheet records 5,500–6,000 vines/ha, an average crop of 7 tonnes/ha and a must yield of about 70%.
Grapes
100% Sangiovese.
Vinification
Fermentation takes place in stainless steel. The current specification gives approximately four weeks of maceration; the 2019 technical sheet describes temperature-controlled stainless-steel vats and about 25 days on the skins.
Ageing
The current release matures for 24 months in tonneaux before further bottle ageing. The oak is described as toasted French oak. The 2019 technical sheet identifies 500 L tonneaux but does not state the maturation period.
Technical data
Alcohol: 14.5%. First vintage: 2008. Ageing potential: up to seven years.
Tasting profile
The 2021 is bright ruby red, with floral aromas, red fruit—especially cherries and blackberries—and attractive woody and spicy notes. It is medium- to full-bodied, with firm tannins, pronounced freshness and a savoury, persistent finish.
Serving and pairing
Suggested with ravioli filled with wild boar and cinnamon, accompanied by roast sauce and Parmesan.
Vintage notes
The 2019 growing season was regular, with spring rainfall creating good water reserves and a warm but not excessively hot summer. The conditions supported both grape quality and a good Sangiovese yield. That vintage showed macerated spring flowers, dried cherry, bark, espresso, ash and woody spice, with firm tannins, freshness and a savoury finish.
