Montecucco Sangiovese

4 cantine e 3 vini. Between Monte Amiata and the sea, in the eastern part of the province of Grosseto, Montecucco reaches from the slopes of the old volcano down towards the last hills before Grosseto and north to the border with Siena along the Ombrone and the Orcia. Seven communes share it — Cinigiano, Civitella Paganico, Campagnatico, Castel del Piano, Roccalbegna, Arcidosso and Seggiano — valley floors excluded. Continua a leggere ↓

Montecucco Sangiovese in breve

The hills are low to medium, averaging about 200 metres, with vineyards between 120 and 500, facing mostly east and south-east. Their soils come mainly from weathered sandstone, with or without limestone, loamy and full of stones, draining easily and holding only moderate water; the Mediterranean climate brings water stress before harvest and good swings between day and night.

The DOCG is reserved for Sangiovese, at least 90 per cent of the grapes, cropped at no more than seven tonnes a hectare. It may not be sold before the first of April of the second year after the harvest, having spent at least twelve months in wood and four in bottle; a Riserva waits until the first of September of the third year, with two years in wood and six months in bottle. Montecucco became a DOC in 1998 and its Sangiovese a DOCG in 2011.
