Vineyard and terroir
The low-trained vineyard occupies volcanic slopes of Mount Vulture around Acerenza, Potenza, at elevations reaching 800 metres. This remote, austere site has volcanic soil rich in clay, calcium, nitrogen and tuff. Vines more than 80 years old supply the fruit.
Grapes
Aglianico del Vulture.
Vinification
The bunches undergo two selections to remove vegetal material. Gentle stalk removal and destemming precede vinification in small wooden vats. Maceration lasts 25–30 days, with manual pump-overs every six hours.
Ageing
The wine matures for 24 months in new barriques, where malolactic fermentation also takes place.
Tasting profile
Dense and tarry, with a silky palate and mouthwatering acidity. Blueberry purée and chocolate-covered cherry are layered with vanilla, dried thyme and oak spice. The style is expressive and modern yet refined and harmonious, ending with a firm, grippy finish that reprises ripe fruit and a tar-like mineral character.
Serving and pairing
Serve at 18°C. Pair with meat dishes and mature cheeses.
