About this wine

First produced in 1970 as Chianti Classico Riserva, Tignanello left the Chianti Classico DOC in 1971, eliminated white grapes in 1975, and settled into its current Sangiovese-Cabernet Sauvignon-Cabernet Franc composition in 1982 — practices credited with helping define the Super Tuscan category. It ferments in truncated conical tanks with skin maceration, ages 13 months in predominantly new French oak with a small percentage of Hungarian oak, then 12 months in bottle before release. The 2023 vintage shows intense ruby red color, ripe cherry, pomegranate and orange aromas with hibiscus and violet notes, sweet spice, cocoa and white pepper, a juicy mouth-filling mid-palate with silky supple tannins, and a finish of blood orange and roasted hazelnut.
