About this wine
Vineyard and terroir
The vineyards lie at the foot of the Alps, on the western bank of the Sesia River. The area is farther north and at a higher altitude than its surroundings, with protection from the Alps and south-facing slopes that receive ample warmth. Volcanic porphyry soils weather into fine gravel at the surface; this combination of geology and climate is unique in Italy.
Grapes
The production rules require Nebbiolo to be blended with Vespolina, while Uva Rara may also be included. These varieties soften Nebbiolo’s powerful structure.
Vinification
Each variety is harvested separately according to ripeness and fermented in large concrete vats.
Ageing
The wine spends 18–24 months in oak barrels, followed by 1–2 years in bottle in the winery’s cellars.
Tasting profile
The 2017 has a classic, understated, old-school Alto Piemonte style, reminiscent of Barolo from years gone by.
Label / history
The deliberately old, dusty-looking label depicts a Roman triumphal chariot commemorating the 101 BC victory of the army led by Consul Gaius Marius and General Quintus Lutatius Catulus. It was commissioned by the current owners’ grandfather to symbolize the connection between the region’s winemaking history and Latin culture.
