About this wine
Vineyard and terroir
The wine is made from selected grapes grown in Arnaldo Caprai's vineyards. The vines are trained to spurred cordon at a density of 5,000–6,000 plants per hectare, with yields of 60–70 quintals per hectare (6–7 tonnes per hectare). Harvest takes place during the final ten days of September and the first ten days of October.
Grapes
70% Sangiovese, 15% Sagrantino and 15% Merlot. The Montefalco Rosso Riserva DOC specification permits 60–80% Sangiovese, 10–25% Sagrantino and other suitable non-aromatic red varieties grown in Umbria.
Ageing
Matured for 20 months in French oak barriques, followed by at least six months in bottle.
Technical data
The first vintage was produced in 1993. Annual production is 15,000 bottles, with 0.75 L and 1.5 L formats available. The expected ageing potential is 10–15 years.
Tasting profile
Intense ruby red with violet nuances. The broad aromatic profile combines cherries in spirit and chocolate with violet, vanilla and further spice. Full and soft on the palate, balanced by vibrant, velvety tannins.
Serving and pairing
Serve at 18–20 °C. Its structure and breadth suit red meats and roasts, while aged cured meats are another recommended pairing.
