About this wine

Vineyard and terroir

The fruit comes from selected hillside vineyards in Montepulciano at 350–400 metres above sea level. The soils are of Pliocene origin, with clay and marl.

Grapes

The blend is led by Sangiovese Grosso, also known as Prunollo Gentile, and Canaiolo Nero, with small amounts of Mammolo, Pulcinculo, Trebbiano and Malvasia.

Vinification

The grapes macerate on their skins for 20 days and ferment in stainless-steel tanks.

Ageing

The wine matures for two years in French oak barrels, followed by at least six months in bottle.

Label / history

The name “Nobile” reflects the wine’s original destination: the tables of aristocrats and the nobility. The Bigi family’s winemaking history began in 1880 with Luigi Bigi. The estate was formerly owned by the La Trinita monastery and stands on a hill of volcanic origin. Vines have been cultivated in Orvieto since Etruscan times; the first written evidence dates to 1292. Three years later, an official committee called the “Guardians of the Vineyards” was founded to protect vine quality. Historical local practices included constructing underground galleries and pressing grapes at ground level.
