Pietro Bosca and the foundation
Pietro Bosca was born in 1799 near a Moscato-covered hill in the Sant’Antonio hamlet of Canelli. His parents, Secondo Bosca and Domenica Scaglione, were small landowners in the Belbo valley. Pietro concluded that dependence on the grapes from a single holding was too exposed to political uncertainty and unstable demand. He therefore developed a broader model based on buying grapes, trading wine and opening markets beyond the immediate area.
In 1831, aged 32, Pietro signed the notarised deed establishing his wine business in Canelli. The founding act marked Bosca’s transition from a small grower’s activity to a commercial wine enterprise. Twelve years later its owned vineyards covered 4 hectares.
Luigi Bosca and the first international network
Luigi Bosca, Pietro’s first son from his second marriage, was born in Canelli in 1843. He married at 21 and eventually had nine children—five daughters and four sons. During the era of mass Italian emigration, Luigi recognised that wine could preserve an emotional connection between emigrants and their homeland. He shipped the family’s wine across the Atlantic, initially aboard sailing vessels and later steamships. One difficult voyage to Argentina lasted 142 days after the ship was held in the Canary Islands by breakdowns; cooperage specialists accompanied shipments to protect the wine during the crossing.
Luigi completed 23 Atlantic crossings and became known as the “Vivandiere degli Emigranti.” The success of his first voyage required him to return quickly to Piemonte and organise further consignments. He opened a Bosca branch in Nice in 1860 and subsequently entrusted foreign operations to his sons. Roberto Pietro took charge of Buenos Aires in 1889, while Carlo was assigned to the New York operation. Luigi also enlarged the underground cellars inherited from Pietro and used them for experiments that included combining sparkling wine with ingredients such as honey and rum.
Roberto Pietro, Carlo and Giuseppe
Roberto Pietro, Luigi’s eldest son, was 24 when he took charge of the Buenos Aires branch at 938 Calle Libertad in 1889. The operation used distinctions including “Marca del mayor Consumo de la República,” supplier to the King of Italy and world exporter of Piedmontese wines.
A New York branch was established in the early twentieth century. Carlo, Luigi’s fourth son, reached Staten Island in July 1909 after travelling through Japan, China and Canada. His commercial success made him an important member of the Italian community in the United States and earned him the name “Mister Moscato.”
The First World War, Prohibition, the Great Depression and Luigi’s death then produced a prolonged crisis. During the 1920s Giuseppe, Luigi’s second son, took control. He closed the New York branch, sold the Buenos Aires operation and worked with Martini & Rossi, Cinzano, Gancia and others on the creation of the Consorzio per la Tutela dell’Asti. Bosca remains associated with the consortium. At the age of 60, Giuseppe transferred leadership to his son Luigi II to preserve continuity.
Luigi II: renewed expansion and vineyard modernisation
The succession was discussed by the family in 1931, when Luigi II was 20 and studying economics at the University of Turin; the company chronology identifies 1932 with the beginning of the fourth generation. He argued that the difficult market required unified leadership and proposed rebuilding the international network while concentrating increasingly on sparkling wine.
Luigi II opened an Asmara branch in 1935, returned to New York in 1947, established an operation in São Paulo in 1948 and reached Mexico City in 1950. Further production outposts followed in Switzerland, Belgium and Austria, later serving as launch points for expansion into eastern markets. He also restored and enlarged the Canelli production sites and underground cellars.
In the 1950s, while many sparkling-wine houses preferred to leave grape growing to farmers or cooperatives, Luigi II used the opportunity created by agrarian reform and the end of sharecropping to acquire numerous vineyards around Canelli. Bosca became a direct producer of Moscato grapes. He introduced the “rittochino” system in Piemonte, turning rows from a cross-slope to a vertical, up-and-down-slope orientation. This allowed machinery to work on steep hillsides, reduced labour and costs, and improved the productive use of demanding sites. The method became an important contribution to the mechanisation of Piedmontese hillside viticulture.
The original core of the present Boglietto production plant dates from the 1950s and subsequently expanded into a much larger industrial complex.
Luigiterzo and diversification
In 1974 Luigi II transferred direction to his eldest son, Luigiterzo, then aged 30. Luigiterzo responded to stronger international competition and technological change by rejecting both a sale to a multinational and dependence on the declining conventions of traditional Italian sparkling wine. His guiding ideas were that what already worked was becoming obsolete and that the past should be used to invent the future.
Bosca developed new tastes and consumption occasions, including Verdi and Sparkletini—low-alcohol sparkling drinks based on wine and fermented cereals. Joint ventures supported their expansion across international markets. In a 1996 address to shareholders, Luigiterzo defended individual invention, experimentation and the courage to pursue solutions without waiting for conventional reassurance.
Luigiterzo also supported the campaign for recognition of Canelli’s historic underground cellars. In 2014 the Cattedrali Sotterranee became part of the UNESCO World Heritage property “Vineyard Landscape of Piedmont: Langhe-Roero and Monferrato.”
The sixth generation and strategic renewal
Pia, Luigi—known as Gigi—and Polina Bosca were called to lead the company at the beginning of the 2000s. Their shared leadership is the first in the company’s history with a strongly female character. Their objective has been to make sparkling wine easier to approach, more everyday and more inclusive while retaining the family’s focus on experimentation.
During the pandemic, in preparation for Bosca’s 190th anniversary in 2021, the sixth generation began a broad renewal programme. It established a long-term strategy centred more strongly on Italy, redesigned the visual identity, introduced new ranges for Ho.Re.Ca. and the large-retail channel, and upgraded production under Industry 4.0 principles.
The industrial modernisation included near-total replacement of the sparkling-wine line in 2018 and construction of refrigerated must storage. Optical inspection, wrapping and case-packing equipment for Sparkletini were renewed in 2019. From the 2020 harvest, vinifiers, base-wine tanks and sparkling-wine autoclaves were automated, giving the oenological team remote control over fermentation temperature, pressure and internal liquid movement. The interconnection of production lines, cellars and laboratory systems continued through 2022.
Bosca obtained and maintained an integrated group of food-safety, traceability, social-responsibility, gender-equality and sustainability certifications. Equalitas became the framework for environmental, economic and social performance. In 2024 a new 500 kWp photovoltaic system entered service alongside the 519 kWp plant installed in 2010.
The repositioning continued with the 2024 Collezione Luigi Bosca for Ho.Re.Ca., the Bosca 1831 retail range, further alcohol-free development in 2025 and the 2026 expansion of Bosca 1831 with still wines. The company remains under the direct management of the founding family.
Terroir
Bosca’s vineyards are distributed across the Langhe and Monferrato landscapes in the provinces of Asti, Cuneo and Alessandria. The holdings encompass sites at Canelli, Castagnole Monferrato, Barbaresco, La Morra, Acqui Terme, Trezzo Tinella, Cassinasco and Monforte d’Alba.
The 2024 vintage illustrates the climatic range affecting these sites. Rainfall from March through June was exceptionally abundant, approaching twice recent averages and delaying flowering, veraison and other phenological stages. Intense summer heat followed, with peaks of 40 °C; the drier conditions allowed ripening to finish. Pinot Nero and Chardonnay for sparkling wine were harvested several days later than the preceding-year norm. Barbera and Nebbiolo benefited from late-August rain and milder temperatures, permitting regular September and October harvests. The resulting wines were described as balanced and finer in structure than those from the preceding drought years.
Canelli’s underground environment is integral to Bosca’s maturation work. The Cattedrali Sotterranee were excavated through calcareous tuff between the sixteenth and nineteenth centuries. The wider Canelli complex shared by four historic houses reaches as deep as 32 metres and extends for more than 20 kilometres. Bosca’s brick-vaulted chambers maintain darkness, humidity and a naturally constant temperature of approximately 12–14 °C, conditions used for long bottle ageing of Metodo Classico sparkling wines.
Winemaking
The current vineyard holding covers 96 hectares across Asti, Cuneo and Alessandria. Its rows extend for 285 kilometres and are supported by 677,792 metres of wire. Bosca quantifies annual vineyard work at 27,014 hours and approximately 3,098 daily footsteps among the rows. Vineyard operations explicitly include hoeing, fertilisation and ploughing.
Grape reception is supervised by the internal oenologist, who uses technical analyses to determine the appropriate harvest date. The 2024 campaign began on 20 August with Pinot Nero suitable for Alta Langa DOCG and ended on 23 October with Nebbiolo suitable for Barolo; 297,400 kg of grapes were received.
The company’s sustainability commitments include protecting the vineyard landscape and biodiversity, preserving soil richness and encouraging agricultural practices intended to maintain the natural equilibrium of the vineyards. Equalitas provides the framework for assessing environmental, social and economic performance.
The historically important “rittochino” system introduced by Luigi II places hillside rows vertically rather than across the contour. It enabled machinery to operate on steep land, reduced physical labour and production costs, and helped bring difficult, highly exposed hillside sites into a more autonomous grape-growing supply chain.
Raw materials and harvest control
Locally grown grapes are vinified after qualitative assessment by the internal oenologist, including technical analysis to determine harvest timing. For wines originating in other Italian regions or abroad, Bosca buys must and bulk wine from selected long-standing suppliers; the technical office directly controls incoming quality.
Processing and analytical control
The documented production scope covers crushing or pressing, fermentation, clarification, stabilisation, filtration, blending, secondary fermentation for sparkling wine and bottling. Each operation follows a processing protocol and is recorded for traceability. The winery maintains analytical plans adapted to product type and process stage. Routine parameters are checked in the internal laboratory, whose performance is compared with external results through inter-laboratory testing. Additional analyses are entrusted to laboratories accredited to UNI CEI EN ISO/IEC 17025:2018.
The food-safety system follows HACCP based on Codex Alimentarius CAC/RCP 1-1969 Rev. 2020 and is certified to FSSC 22000. Product traceability is managed under UNI EN ISO 22005:2008.
Sparkling-wine production
Metodo Classico undergoes its secondary fermentation in bottle, followed by extended ageing on the lees in the historic Canelli cellars. Bottles mature in darkness at a naturally stable 12–14 °C; principal Metodo Classico bottlings remain there for at least 30 months, while the longest-aged Riserva del Nonno exceeds ten years. Manual work includes riddling and the later stages associated with disgorgement.
For the Charmat or Martinotti method, secondary fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless-steel autoclaves. A modern insulated room contains eight 1,000-hL autoclaves, giving 8,000 hL of capacity for secondary fermentation and carbonation of wine-based drinks. The room also contains automatic cartridge filtration, washing and carbonation equipment.
Automated cellar systems
Sensors and software connect the grape fermenters, base-wine department and autoclaves. The oenological team can remotely monitor and modify fermentation temperature, sparkling-wine pressure and internal liquid movement. These parameters are used to manage aromatic development and the fineness of the perlage.
A refrigerated, insulated must-storage building contains 34 stainless-steel tanks with a combined capacity of 11,500 hL. It is maintained at 0 °C to preserve musts—especially Moscato intended for Asti and Toselli—with reduced sulphur dioxide. Remote temperature monitoring sends mobile alerts if conditions rise abnormally.
Three tangential filters operate in the base-wine department. Their use reduces reliance on diatomaceous-earth filtration. Internal analytical and research equipment includes a multiparameter Foss instrument and a gas chromatograph used to examine aromatic peaks in products under development.
Bottling and packaging
The sparkling-wine line has been completely renewed. Its equipment includes automated clean-in-place washing and a Bertolaso isobaric filler. Fully sanitizable stainless-steel circuits protect the product from oxygen and microbial contamination; washing cycles and bottle rejection following breakage are automated. Zone 2’s end-of-line equipment was renewed for case packing and palletisation.
Responsible inputs and utilities
Processes are designed to reduce water consumption and target the use of processing aids, additives and nutrients. For each litre handled in 2024, recorded inputs were 0.30 g of clarification enzymes, 0.17 g of yeasts, activators and bacteria, 0.50 g of stabilisers and tannins, 2.06 g of final additives including sulphites, antioxidants and acidifying agents, and 0.10 g of diatomaceous earth and cellulose. Use of oenological products declined from 2023, particularly during clarification, following closer selection of base wines and inputs.
The cellar’s chemical-physical wastewater pretreatment plant has been progressively enlarged and renewed. Insulated autoclaves, upgraded refrigeration, thermal and compressed-air systems, variable-speed drives, floating-condensation cooling towers, condensing boilers and recovery of steam condensate reduce energy requirements. Automated cleaning has also lowered water and chemical use.
Philosophy
Bosca frames its identity around the idea of being “controcorrente”: questioning established habits, experimenting and accepting the possibility of failure in order to create new products and drinking occasions. Its declared purpose is to bring the enjoyment of Italian sparkling wine to a broad audience with skill and audacity.
The sixth generation seeks to transform the conventional toast into an experience that is easier, more everyday and more inclusive. This principle has informed the creation of traditional sparkling wines for new channels as well as early investment in low- and no-alcohol alternatives.
Continuity is treated as active reinvention rather than repetition. Luigiterzo’s principles—regarding what already works as potentially obsolete and using the past to invent the future—remain central to the company’s self-understanding. The current generation combines inherited sparkling-wine expertise with production technology, new formats and an emphasis on accessibility.
Environmental responsibility is organised around Equalitas’s three pillars: environmental, social and economic sustainability. Priorities include efficient water and energy use, reduced processing inputs, lighter and more recyclable packaging, employee welfare, gender equality, biodiversity and support for the local community. The naturally stable historic cellars are treated as an early model of low-energy maturation.
