About this wine
Vineyard and terroir
Riesling Renano was planted at Cascine Drago in Alba in 1987. The decision followed the estate’s positive experience with Pinot Nero in 1985. Drawing on Tino Colla’s experience in France, the family selected Rhine Riesling material to combine freshness and minerality with the capacity to evolve in bottle.
Grapes
100% Riesling Renano.
Vinification
The grapes are harvested by hand and gently pressed. The must settles for 24 hours at 8–10°C before racking. Alcoholic fermentation takes place in stainless steel at 20–22°C, without malolactic fermentation.
Ageing
The wine remains on its fine lees for several months and undergoes natural chilling during winter. It is bottled in spring and rests in bottle for several months before release.
Technical data
Alcohol is 12–13% vol., total acidity 7–8 g/L and dry extract 18–20 g/L.
Tasting profile
Pale straw yellow with green highlights. The elegant nose evokes mountain flowers, persistent minerality and citrus fullness. The palate combines saline acidity with complexity, volume and length. In its first year it is fresh and citrus-led; with time it develops the variety’s more complex aromas while retaining fresh acidity.
Serving and pairing
Serve at 9–11°C in a tulip-shaped glass. Suitable as an aperitif and with fish starters.
Label / history
The name Ranera refers to the frogs heard singing in the evening. A small stream at the bottom of the hill makes the area a favoured habitat for them.
