About this wine

Vineyard and terroir

The grapes come from Vigna Vecchia and Vigna Eucalipti in Gavorrano, Grosseto. The vineyards stand at 90 m above sea level on medium-textured, stone-rich soil. The vines are trained to spurred cordon at a density of 5,900 plants per hectare, with a yield of 55 quintals per hectare.

Grapes

60% Sangioveto, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Merlot.

Vinification

Merlot is harvested in late August, while Sangioveto and Cabernet Sauvignon are picked in mid-September. Vinification takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel, and malolactic fermentation is completed.

Ageing

The 2019 technical sheet specifies 14 months in barriques, 80% of them new, followed by 11 months in bottle. The wine page gives a separate figure of 24 months for maturation before bottling.

Tasting profile

Intense ruby red with garnet reflections. The bouquet combines fruit with an attractive spicy character. The palate brings together power, intensity and elegance, with soft tannins creating a rounded texture; it is deep yet lively and balanced.

Serving and pairing

Suitable for red meats, roasts, game and mature cheeses. Available in 0.75 L, 1.5 L and 3 L formats.

Vintage notes

The 2019 season was highly variable. Below-average temperatures in spring and early summer, together with rain during flowering, delayed the later phenological stages and extended the vegetative cycle. Summer was sunny and hot without causing scorching or dehydration, while pronounced day–night temperature differences supported full phenolic ripening. The resulting vintage was considered among the best of the preceding years.

Label / history

The inaugural vintage was 2004. Conceived as the Italian-French project’s grand vin in the Bordeaux tradition, it was created by Alessandro Cellai with Christian Le Sommer, winemaker at Les Domaines Baron de Rothschild-Lafite.
