About this wine
Vineyard and terroir
The hilltop vineyard slopes down from the walls of the historic Poggio alle Mura castle at an altitude of 220 m. Vines planted in 1992 are trained using the cordon system.
Grapes
The vineyard was planted with carefully selected Sangiovese clones.
Vinification
After harvest, the grapes undergo several rounds of selection. Maceration lasts 12–13 days, followed by alcoholic fermentation in stainless-steel tanks at 27–29 °C. The wine is bottled without filtration.
Ageing
Ninety per cent of the wine matures for 24 months in French oak barriques dried and toasted at the estate; the remaining 10% matures in large Slavonian oak casks. It then ages in bottle for at least 12 months before release.
Label / history
First released in 1997, Poggio alle Mura followed more than two decades of research and development and was Castello Banfi’s first unfiltered wine. The vineyard takes its name from the historic Poggio alle Mura castle. The label depicts the fortified medieval castle, built in the 11th century.
