About this wine
Vineyard and terroir
The hilltop vineyard slopes down from the walls of Poggio alle Mura castle at 220 m. The vines were planted in 1992 and are trained using the cordon system.
Grapes
The vineyard was planted with carefully selected Sangiovese clones.
Vinification
After harvest, the grapes undergo several rounds of selection. Maceration lasts 12–14 days, followed by alcoholic fermentation in stainless-steel tanks at 27–29 °C.
Ageing
Sixty per cent of the wine ages for 24 months in French barriques seasoned and toasted at Castello Banfi; the remaining 40% ages in large Slavonian oak casks. Further ageing takes place in bottle in the winery’s cellars, with release in the sixth year after harvest.
Label / history
The vineyard takes its name from the historic Poggio alle Mura castle. The label depicts the fortified medieval castle, built in the eleventh century.
