About this wine
Vineyard and terroir
Vicoregio 36 comes from an experimental vineyard at Castelnuovo Berardenga, planted at 350 m with southeast, south and southwest exposures. Its richly textured soils combine Alberese limestone and clay. The 20-year-old vines are trained to spur cordon and Guyot at 5,800–6,660 plants per hectare.
Grapes
100% Sangiovese representing 36 different biotypes, including 18 massal selections taken from old estate vineyards. The project makes the wine simultaneously a single-variety expression and a blend of distinct Sangiovese material.
Vinification
The 2022 crop was picked by hand on 27 September. Fermentation took place in 500 L French-oak barrels at 26–28°C, followed by 20 days of maceration.
Ageing
Malolactic fermentation and maturation took place over 18 months in 500 L French-oak barrels, with 50% new oak. The wine was then finished for four months in concrete tanks, bottled in December 2024 and released in September 2025.
Technical data
The 2022 contains 14.45% alcohol and has total acidity of 5.88 g/L. Production was 13,000 bottles, available in 750 ml, 1.5 L and 3 L formats.
Tasting profile
Marked by intensity, deep colour and a powerful yet bright bouquet.
Serving and pairing
Pair with spiced roast meats, stewed game, aged cheeses, mushrooms and truffles. Ageing potential exceeds 20 years.
Vintage notes
The 2022 growing season began with a mild winter and limited rainfall. Spring temperatures started near the seasonal norm and then rose steadily, supporting homogeneous vegetative growth. Sangiovese budbreak began around 10 April, varying with site conditions, and flowering occurred around 16 May. Continued heat and drought through summer thickened the skins and helped the grapes endure ripening. Targeted vineyard protection was possible because rainfall was scarce and humidity remained normal. Grape health was very satisfactory, though drought reduced cluster weight and production. Across the estate, harvest ran from 1 September to 6 October, April–September rainfall ranged from 440 to 621 mm, and the vintage was rated Good.
Label / history
The first vintage was 2008, initially classified as IGT. The name refers to the Vicoregio vineyard and its collection of 36 Sangiovese biotypes.
