About this wine
Grapes
50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 20% Sangiovese. The Cabernet-led red blend is dedicated to Tuscany’s metaphorical “dark knights”: kindred spirits and standard-bearers for a noble cause.
Vinification
Fermentation and skin contact last 10–15 days in stainless-steel tanks at 28–30°C. Part of the must ferments under pressure at lower temperatures to retain varietal aromas. Malolactic fermentation is divided between barrels and tanks.
Ageing
After racking, the wine returns to oak for another six months, followed by three months in bottle before release.
Tasting profile
Intense ripe red-berry fruit leads the aroma, complemented by sweet spices, coffee, chocolate and vanilla. The full-bodied palate is ample and balanced, with silky tannins and a sweet, spicy finish and aftertaste.
Serving and pairing
Serve at 18°C with roasted red meats, game, sauces or cheese.
Vintage notes
The 2022 season began with regular early growth and excellent flowering during a warm, dry spring. Summer heat and drought accelerated ripening, while August hail severely affected many vineyards; careful management and vine resilience nevertheless delivered good to excellent fruit in the surviving plots.
The low-yielding 2021 season produced healthy, balanced grapes despite April frost and summer drought. Favorable September conditions allowed a late harvest of limited but complex and elegant Sangiovese from older vineyards. In 2020, late-September and October rain made vineyard position and exposure decisive; some sites produced lighter tannic density, while others gave fruit with strong character and spice. The 2019 vintage combined good volume with uniformly healthy, ripe and balanced grapes, allowing long macerations and promising long-lived reds.
