About this wine

Vineyard and terroir

Antica Chiusina comes from the estate’s namesake vineyard in the hills of Acquaviva di Montepulciano. An ancient Etruscan road that once connected Montepulciano and Chiusi still crosses the vineyard.

Grapes

Sangiovese with other varieties traditionally used in the area; precise proportions are not given.

Vinification

The grapes are harvested manually into 20 kg crates. Fermentation and maceration take place at a controlled 24–28 °C, with daily pump-overs and délestage. After alcoholic fermentation, post-fermentation maceration continues at 29 °C.

Ageing

The wine matures in oak for a minimum of 18 months.

Tasting profile

Ruby red with a lightly garnet rim. Aromas of ripe plum and sour cherry develop into cinnamon, resin, tobacco and clove. The palate is complex, warm and full-bodied, with a dense tannic weave and good persistence. Another published description emphasizes black and red berries, mineral nuances, power, elegance and a long finish.

Serving and pairing

Pair with roasted red meat, roast game or stewed beef; wild-boar stew is a particularly suitable match.

Label / history

The name identifies the Antica Chiusina vineyard and its connection to the ancient Etruscan route between Montepulciano and Chiusi. The wine is reserved for vintages in which grape ripening and the natural conditions of Montepulciano are considered exceptional.
