About this wine
Vineyard and terroir
The Sangiovese grows on hillsides around the Col d'Orcia estate in the southern part of the Montalcino region. The estate covers approximately 540 ha, and its Montalcino vineyards lie at 450 m above sea level. The 1,750 m Monte Amiata range shelters the grapes from severe weather, heavy downpours and hail. The area has a mild Mediterranean climate, warm sunshine and soils suited to vine cultivation.
Over the decade preceding the source text, the estate’s winemakers worked with the University of Florence on experimental research into selecting grapes according to the local soils and microclimate.
Vinification
Riserva is produced in limited quantities and only in selected, particularly successful years.
Ageing
Riserva must mature in the cellar for five years before release. The 2005 vintage spent four years in Slavonian and Allier oak barrels, followed by one year in bottle.
Tasting profile
Complex, elegant and rich, with bright Sangiovese fruit and spice from the oak. Pronounced tannins frame an enveloping, multidimensional palate.
