About this wine
Vineyard and terroir
The grapes come from the estate’s vineyards among the hills of Sant’Angelo in Colle, in southern Montalcino. The vineyards lie at 450 m above sea level. Mount Amiata, rising to 1,750 m, shelters the vines from severe weather, heavy downpours and hail. The area has a mild Mediterranean climate, abundant sunshine and soils suited to viticulture.
The estate covers approximately 540 ha. Col d’Orcia has also conducted experimental research with the University of Florence to select grapes suited to the local soils and microclimate.
Grapes
The blend comprises 50% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Syrah.
Ageing
Each variety ages separately for 12 months in new 225 L French oak barrels. After blending, the wine ages for a further six months, followed by 12 months in bottle before release.
Tasting profile
The wine has a balanced aromatic profile. Powerful Cabernet Sauvignon tannins lead the palate, accompanied by subtle fruit and spice from the Merlot and Syrah. The flavour is rich, with a long, memorable finish.
