About this wine

Vineyard and terroir

Ciampoleto comes from the San Giorgio estate at Castelnuovo dell’Abate in Montalcino. The property occupies the crest of a ridge overlooking the Val d’Orcia beneath Monte Amiata. Mediterranean winds from the west contribute to a dry climate, while marked day-to-night temperature changes occur particularly toward the end of summer.

The steep hillside vineyards lie between 250 and 400 metres above sea level and face east and south-east. The vines are spur-cordon trained and maintained at very low yields. Soils are rocky and rich in skeletal material, with substantial clay, sections of conglomerate and tuff outcrops. Average vine age is approximately 20 years.

Grapes

100% Sangiovese, the only grape variety cultivated at San Giorgio.

Vinification

The grapes are selected and picked by hand. Spontaneous fermentation takes place in wooden and stainless-steel vats, followed by a long maceration with frequent pump-overs. Malolactic fermentation is completed before maturation.

Ageing

The wine matures for one year in Slavonian oak casks and then rests in bottle for at least six months.
