About this wine
Vineyard and terroir
The grapes come from the heart of the Primitivo di Manduria area, between Manduria and Sava, in Alto Salento. The vines are 30 years old and trained as alberello, the traditional bush-vine method of southern Italy. They give a small but more concentrated crop with intense flavour and aroma.
Vinification
The grapes are harvested slightly overripe, for greater depth and ripeness. After destemming and crushing, they macerate at a controlled temperature for 10–12 days with regular pump-overs, to extract as much colour, aroma and tannin as possible from the skins. Malolactic fermentation takes place in steel tanks, softening the acidity and rounding out the palate.
Ageing
The wine ages for 12 months in American and French oak barriques, which give a smoother texture and add spicy, vanilla and woody notes.
Tasting profile
Old vines give fruit with especially concentrated, expressive aromas. The palate is rich and generous, with ripe dark fruit, sweet spices and soft, mature tannins.
Serving and pairing
Best with meat dishes from Puglia, and also with game and mature sheep's milk cheeses.
Label / history
Luccarelli is a project established in 2008 by Terre di Sava and Farnese Vini. Farnese has controlled it since 2013. The range was created to show the full potential of Puglia and introduce wine lovers to the region's wines.
