About this wine
Vineyard and terroir
The Monica grapes grow in the Monica subregion of Sardinia. The climate is Mediterranean, with hot, dry summers and cold, rainy winters, and the surrounding mountains create a microclimate that stays favourable even in the hottest months. The soils are mainly limestone-based and rich in phosphorus, potassium and magnesium. The vineyards lie at the foot of Monte Arci, an extinct volcano that rises above the town and nourishes and strengthens the roots of the vines.
Vinification
The grapes are picked at optimal ripeness, after careful selection in the vineyards, which contributes to the concentrated flavour of the wine. Fermentation takes place with the skins at a controlled temperature of 26–28 °C and lasts around 10 days.
Ageing
The wine is aged for six months in French oak barrels.
Tasting profile
Intensely fruity, with a concentrated flavour.
Label / history
The Atzei winery is owned by Fantini Group and is surrounded by the Giara mountains, in an area of unspoiled natural beauty. Much of the land is still ploughed by horses, and local craftspeople continue to follow ancient traditions reflected in Sardinian tapestries. To celebrate this heritage, the winery created the "Saragat" range, whose labels feature traditional patterns.
