About this wine
Vineyard and terroir
The fruit comes from a 25-hectare vineyard at 300 metres above sea level. Its stony clay-limestone soils face south and southwest. The vineyard lies at Tenuta dell’Ammiraglia in the sunny hills of Maremma, where sea breezes moderate high summer temperatures.
Vinification
The grapes were harvested by hand from late September to early October. Fermentation took place in stainless-steel tanks for 10 days at temperatures no higher than 30 °C, followed by maceration and malolactic fermentation.
Ageing
The wine matured in French oak barrels for 24 months.
Vintage notes
In 2009, favourable conditions allowed the grapes to reach optimal ripeness while retaining good acidity and aromatic complexity.
Label / history
Tenuta dell’Ammiraglia is owned by the Frescobaldi family. The estate was once granted by the Pope to a naval commander in gratitude for successful battles against the Venetian fleet. The family later renamed it from La Capitana to Ammiraglia, Italian for “flagship,” preserving the maritime theme. Architect Piero Sartogo designed the winery within a fissure in the rock so that it blends into the surrounding landscape.
