About this wine
Vineyard and terroir
This Riserva is selected from the historic Pinino vineyard planted in 1980 and the finest grapes from Canchi. Its exacting quality requirements mean it is not necessarily produced every year. Pinino lies north of Montalcino at 284.2 m above sea level, with stony soil containing marl and limestone. Canchi is northeast of Montalcino at 318.2 m, on predominantly clay soil with traces of silt. Both sites face southeast, and the vines are trained to spurred cordon.
Grapes
100% Sangiovese Grosso.
Vinification
Harvest took place from 25 September to 4 October. Fermentation was conducted in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks, with 18–25 days of skin maceration.
Ageing
At least 36 months in oak casks and barriques.
Technical data
Alcohol is 14%, total acidity 5 g/L and dry extract 29.3 g/L. The 2019 production comprised 1,300 bottles in 750 ml format.
Tasting profile
Ruby red with garnet reflections. The bouquet begins with cherry and raspberry preserve, then develops warm-spice nuances. Full-bodied and smooth on the palate, with velvety, well-integrated tannins and a strongly persistent finish.
Vintage notes
The beginning of 2019 brought above-average temperatures and moderate rainfall, followed by a cooler spring. Summer temperatures were around average and precipitation was limited. Stored water reserves and the absence of extreme heat kept the canopy largely intact and efficient, allowing slow, even ripening and strong phenolic and technological maturity. Rain in the first week of September delayed harvest and helped moderate grape sugar accumulation and potential alcohol. The resulting wines showed elegance, finesse, balanced tannins, well-defined aromas and pronounced primary-fruit notes.
