About this wine

Vineyard and terroir

The fruit comes from two vineyard areas. Pinino, in northern Montalcino, lies at 284.2 m above sea level and has stony soil with galestro and alberese. Canchi is northeast of Montalcino at 318.2 m, on predominantly clay soil with silt. Both sites face southeast, and the vines are trained to spurred cordon.

Grapes

100% Sangiovese Grosso.

Vinification

The 2022 harvest took place from 12 to 21 September. Fermentation was carried out in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks, followed by 18–25 days of maceration on the skins.

Ageing

At least 6 months in oak casks.

Technical data

Alcohol is 14%, total acidity 5 g/L and dry extract 29.9 g/L. Production amounted to 20,000 bottles in 750 ml format.

Tasting profile

Lively ruby red. The strongly fruit-led nose offers fresh raspberry and cherry with light spicy notes. Fresh and full-bodied on the palate, with velvety tannins and a pleasant, persistent finish. Its combination of structure and easy drinkability gives it a versatile character.

Vintage notes

The 2022 season was exceptionally hot and dry. Low rainfall persisted from the beginning of the year through spring, and temperatures climbed well above seasonal averages from the second half of May. Sangiovese Grosso endured the pronounced heat and water stress through its anisohydric behaviour. Rain finally arrived at the end of July, lowering daytime temperatures and increasing day–night variation. The necessarily early harvest finished around the last week of September and yielded grapes rich in polyphenols with an appealing aromatic profile.
