About this wine
Vineyard and terroir
The fruit comes from the winery's own vineyards in the Langhe, at 400 m above sea level on southeast-facing slopes that give the vines plenty of sunlight. The vines were planted between 1965 and 1975. They grow in limestone soils with a high content of quartz sand and grey sandstone.
Vinification
Grapes are picked by hand during the coolest hours of the day and placed in 18–20 kg crates to keep the berries intact. In 2021 Barbera was harvested in the second half of September, and Nebbiolo from late September to early October. On arrival at the winery the grapes go into a cold room and are chilled to 6 °C for several days, which preserves their bright aromas and prevents spontaneous fermentation. Each variety is vinified separately.
Ageing
The wine ages for around 12 months in third- and fourth-use barriques. The final blend is assembled after numerous tastings. It is then bottled and kept in the winery's cellar at a controlled temperature until it is ready for sale.
Label / history
"Passione" was the first wine created by the winery's founder, Gian Piero Marrone, together with his daughter Valentina, who is now the company's winemaker. The name is Italian for "passion". It reflects the love of winemaking and the dedication to hard work that Marrone passed on to his children. The Marrone family has been making wine for four generations.
