About this wine
Vineyard and terroir
The grapes come from Monteraponi’s oldest vineyard, Il Campitello, whose vines average more than 40 years of age. The isolated site lies at 420 metres above sea level and is surrounded by forest. Organic practices and minimal intervention are used in both the vineyard and cellar.
Vinification
The grapes are harvested by hand at optimal ripeness. Fermentation begins spontaneously in glass-lined concrete tanks, without temperature control or cultured yeasts. Maceration lasts up to 35 days, with daily pump-overs, followed by malolactic fermentation.
Ageing
The wine matures for at least 26 months in large oval casks of French or Slavonian oak, followed by three months in concrete tanks for natural settling. It is bottled by gravity during the waning moon, without filtration or fining.
Vintage notes
In 2018, heavy rain and hail damaged some Tuscan areas planted with Sangiovese, but hot summer days and cooler nights ultimately produced a robust, healthy crop. The season’s red wines had juicy fruit, good acidity and structure, and the year was widely considered exceptionally good for Tuscany.
