About this wine
Vineyard and terroir
Piantonaia comes from the namesake vineyard on the upper hillside of Ruffoli, in Greve in Chianti, at an average elevation of 430 m. The site is hilly, faces west–southwest and has sandy-silty soil containing a very high proportion of stones. The 15-year-old vines are trained to spurred cordon. Vittorio Fiore and his sons are the winegrowers.
Grapes
100% Merlot. The grapes are harvested during the second ten-day period of September.
Vinification
Alcoholic fermentation takes place in stainless-steel tanks over 12 days. Bottling is carried out in July.
Ageing
The wine matures for 18 months in new 225-litre French oak barriques, followed by at least six months in bottle.
Technical data
The current wine page gives an alcohol content of 13.5%, while the technical sheet gives 13%. Average annual production is 1,000–1,400 standard bottles. Available formats are 750 ml, 1.5 L and 3 L. The 750 ml format is packed in six-bottle wooden cases; the two larger formats are offered in individual wooden cases.
