About this wine
Vineyard and terroir
The grapes come from the Florentine hills around Fiesole in Tuscany. The vineyards have lean soils containing Galestro and limestone. Vines are trained to low-spurred cordon and Guyot and cultivated organically. Harvest takes place by hand in the second half of September, with selection performed in the vineyard.
Grapes
Trebbiano Toscano and Verdicchio. Mauro Galardi planted Verdicchio at Poggiopiano in 1987, intending to produce a wine suited to the local cuisine.
Vinification
VinOrange began in 2016, when Mauro and his daughter Martina developed a skin-contact white wine designed to retain the contribution of skins and seeds, materials normally removed before white-wine fermentation. Grape selection and vinification focus on tannins, phenolic compounds, aromas and aromatic precursors from these components.
The wine ferments on its skins in stainless-steel tanks, with manual punch-downs. Skin maceration lasts between three and eight weeks depending on the vintage.
Ageing
The wine is refined in second-use barriques, followed by a minimum of 12 months in bottle. It has strong potential for extended ageing.
Technical data
The wine is classified as I.G.T. Bianco di Toscana. Production is certified organic by ICEA under EU organic regulations EC 834/07 and EC 889/08.
Tasting profile
Amber yellow in colour. The intense aromatic profile combines herbs, dried apricot, dried fig, almond, chamomile and honey. The palate is rounded, harmonious and long, balancing tannins with acidity before a finish of sweet almond and dried fruit.
Serving and pairing
Serve at 16 °C. Pair with full-flavoured soft cheeses, game pâtés, white meat or salmon.
Label / history
Verdicchio was planted at Poggiopiano in 1987 as the basis for a wine intended to accompany local food. In 2016, Mauro and Martina Galardi extended that work through long skin contact, creating VinOrange as an amber, macerated white wine.
