About this wine

Vineyard and terroir

The Vermentino is supplied through close work with local organic growers on the coast of Maremma. The vineyards occupy gently rolling hills at 30–50 m above sea level. Their iron-rich soils combine sparse silt and alluvial sand, with gravel and surface pebbles in places. The vines are approximately ten years old on average, and the average wine yield is 40–50 hL/ha. The wine is certified organic and vegan.

Grapes

100% Vermentino. Mongrana Bianco was created in 2020, inspired by the intensity of flavour found in Maremma Vermentino and conceived as the white counterpart to the other Mongrana wines.

Vinification

The grapes are vinified in small cement and stainless-steel vats.

Ageing

Maturation lasts six months in cement and stainless-steel vats.

Technical data

The 2024 wine has 13.0% alcohol, pH 3.35, total acidity of 5.5 g/L and residual sugar below 1 g/L. Annual production is approximately 18,000 bottles. It is packaged in 750 mL bottles and 12-bottle cardboard cases.

Tasting profile

Bright straw yellow with golden highlights. Fresh citrus and tangy yellow fruit lead the aroma, followed by jasmine and honeysuckle. Citrus, golden plum, peach and sun-warmed wild herbs also shape its fragrant Mediterranean profile. The palate is crisp and refreshing, with lively acidity supplying structure and balance. Rosemary and thyme bring further complexity, while a delicate saline note carries through to a clean, elegant and lingering finish.

Serving and pairing

Serve at 7–10 °C. Suggested glasses are the Riedel Extreme Riesling 4441/15 and Zalto Universal 11300. Designed for youthful drinking, the wine suits appetizers, casual gatherings, Mediterranean food and outdoor spring or summer meals. Vegetable pairings include asparagus, peas, fava beans and even artichokes. More specific suggestions include pesto pasta, pea and mint risotto, grilled chicken with lemon and herbs, pan-seared scallops, asparagus and shrimp risotto with lemon and tarragon, fritto misto, fresh summer rolls, Thai mango salad, and fattoush or tabbouleh with hummus and pita bread.

Vintage notes

The 2024 growing season began with a cold, rainy spring that demanded close attention to fungal pressure. A hot, dry summer followed, before unexpectedly heavy September rain extended the harvest. Picking began in the first days of September. Healthy, high-quality grapes were obtained despite the unsettled conditions. The resulting wines combine lively acidity and lower sugar levels with complex aromas reminiscent of historic vintages and are approachable in youth.

Label / history

The name Mongrana, like Palafreno and Turpino, pays tribute to Ludovico Ariosto’s 16th-century Italian epic poem Orlando Furioso. Sebastiano Cossia Castiglioni designed the label. Its proprietary Simona typeface was created exclusively for Querciabella by Jane Patterson and John Downer. Each vintage carries a different photograph; the 2024 technical sheet uses Emanuele Costantini’s image of the Querciabella vineyards at Alberese in Maremma.
