About this wine

Vineyard and terroir

The fruit comes from Oasi and Bagnaccio in Radda in Chianti. These sites form part of a 14.5-hectare group of three parcels—Bagnaccio, Oasi and Rialdoli—acquired in 2007 on the western side of the commune, along the right bank of the Pesa. Their study marked Querciabella’s first experiment with single-origin Sangiovese and helped establish the Genius Loci project.

The parcels lie at 400–450 m on predominantly Macigno del Chianti soils. Rialdoli is the most exposed, with stronger airflow and rockier, freer-draining ground. Bagnaccio is cooler and more humid, with a higher clay content. Woodland and natural vegetation shelter Oasi, whose conditions combine characteristics of the other two parcels.

Radda’s relatively cool climate, pronounced day-to-night temperature variation and steady ventilation allow Sangiovese to ripen slowly, evenly and over an extended period. These conditions shape wines with dark fruit, finely structured tannins, vibrant acidity, tension and depth.

Grapes

100% Sangiovese.

Vinification

The wine undergoes 30 days of skin maceration, with 30% whole bunches. Average wine yield is 30 hl/ha.

Ageing

Maturation lasts 16–18 months in large casks of 25–30 hl, followed by 30 months in bottle.

Technical data

Chianti Classico DOCG Gran Selezione. Alcohol: 14% vol. Annual production is 2,600 bottles. Available formats are 750 ml in a three-bottle cardboard box and 1.5 L in a single-bottle wooden case.

Tasting profile

The 2021 vintage presents the darker and more structured side of Sangiovese from Oasi’s galestro-rich slopes at 450 m. Black cherry, violet, pine needle and restrained earthy aromas are layered over a mineral tension. It is medium-bodied yet powerful, combining lively acidity with fine, persistent tannins. The finish is chalky and resonant, carrying depth, intensity and the character of this cool, slowly ripening site.

Serving and pairing

Its dark fruit, persistent tannins, acidity and savoury depth suit rich, layered dishes as well as more adventurous combinations. Suggested pairings include wild boar ragù with pappardelle, rosemary-and-garlic roasted lamb, venison medallions with star anise and blackcurrant jus, and pigeon breast with a cocoa-and-chilli sauce inspired by mole. Vegetable-led options include mushroom terrine with truffle vinaigrette and smoked hazelnuts, or charred eggplant with miso, tamarind and black garlic.

Vintage notes

The 2021 Gran Selezione Radda is a dark, powerful and precise expression of Sangiovese. Concentrated flavour remains balanced by freshness and vibrancy, while its layers emerge gradually in the glass. It has excellent cellar potential.

Label / history

Gran Selezione Radda belongs to Genius Loci, Querciabella’s exploration of the relationship between individual Chianti Classico sites and Sangiovese. The project is based on single-parcel vinification, research and comparative tasting. The 2021 release comprises three site-specific Gran Selezione wines from Greve, Radda and Lamole.
