About this wine

Vinification

The Merlot grapes undergo maceration in stainless-steel tanks at 28–30 °C.

Ageing

The wine matures for approximately 16 months: one third in large wooden casks and two thirds in French oak barrels. After bottling, it rests for a further 12 months in the winery’s cellars.

Tasting profile

Elegant, with aromas of ripe berries and chocolate. The palate is rich and well balanced, combining Alpine freshness with generous Mediterranean fruit notes.

Label / history

The Colterenzio cooperative takes its name from the village of Colterenzio near Girlan, the site of a vineyard planted by the ancient Romans and regarded as one of Europe’s oldest. The cooperative was founded in 1960 by 28 local farmers; today, it comprises more than 290 winegrowers with around 300 ha of vineyards.

The region’s wines were favoured by Archduke Sigismund, who lived at Firmiano Castle in the 15th century, while evidence of local winemaking reaches back to Roman times. Colterenzio’s labels bear the silhouette of the castle built by Sigismund, who supported the development of vineyards in the area. The castle is now almost entirely in ruins.
