About this wine
Vineyard and terroir
The grapes grow in vineyards in the commune of Osimo, at an altitude of 150 metres, with a south-eastern exposure.
Vinification
The grapes are harvested by hand no earlier than the second half of October, as Montepulciano ripens relatively late and does not attain full phenolic ripeness before then. They are destemmed and gently crushed. Fermentation takes place in stainless-steel tanks at 27–29 °C for 12–14 days, followed by malolactic fermentation.
Ageing
The wine matures for 12–14 months in 225-litre oak barriques, followed by 6–8 months in bottle.
Serving and pairing
A medium-sized, rounded glass is recommended to present the complexity of the aroma.
Label / history
First produced in 1985, the wine takes its name from Mount Conero—“komaros” in Greek—and from the evergreen strawberry tree of the same name that grows on the mountain.
Gino Umani Ronchi founded the winery in 1950 after purchasing a large plot in the low hills of Marche near Cupramontana. Now owned by the Bernetti family, the estate has six vineyards totalling 100 hectares in the Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi Classico and Rosso Conero areas and rents approximately another 40 hectares. Alongside its traditional Rosso Conero and Verdicchio wines, it has experimented with other varieties, particularly Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Chardonnay.
