Dolcetto di Ovada Superiore in breve
Dolcetto has always been the grape of this corner of the Monferrato — so much so that it was once called Uva di Ovada, or by naturalists Uva Ovadensis — and its planting spread especially from the nineteenth century. The rules describe a wine that can age but is easy to drink young, with moderate acidity and alcohol.
The DOCG covers only the more ambitious version, Dolcetto di Ovada Superiore, which may also be labelled simply Ovada. It must be pure Dolcetto; a wine from a named vineyard, a vigna, is cropped at no more than six tonnes a hectare, and one aged for at least 24 months may be called Riserva. The Superiore was first recognised as a style of the Dolcetto di Ovada DOC in 1972 and became a DOCG in 2008.
