Vineyard and terroir

“Priorà” is selected from well-exposed Barbera sites in Verduno and Monforte. The sources are Rocche dell’Olmo, with an easterly exposure at 310–360 m, and Semolino, facing west at 320–350 m, in Verduno; and Gramolere, facing southwest at 400–450 m, in Monforte. The combined vineyard area is approximately 1.2 hectares. Soils are silty and sandy limestone, and the vines average about 35 years of age. They are Guyot-trained at approximately 4,500 vines per hectare.

Grapes

Barbera.

Vinification

Harvest is manual and takes place in the first half of October. Fermentation and maceration last 10–12 days in stainless-steel tanks maintained at 29–31 °C.

Ageing

Maturation lasts 12–14 months in 500-litre French oak barrels and/or 2,000–4,000-litre French or Slavonian oak casks. The wine then spends 2 months in stainless steel and at least another 2 months in horizontally stored bottles. Bottling occurs in spring of the second year after harvest.

Tasting profile

The wine is conceived to emphasize Barbera’s complexity, richness and capacity for extended development.

Serving and pairing

Its indicated longevity is 6–10 years.

Label / history

First produced in 2000, “Priorà” takes its identity from a selection of especially well-exposed vineyard sites considered particularly suitable for Barbera.
