Vineyard and terroir
Monvigliero is historically regarded as Verduno’s grand cru and as one of the representative hills of the wider Barolo area. The approximately 1.4-hectare vineyard has limestone and silty soils. The technical datasheet places it at 250–310 m with south-to-southwest exposure and gives an average vine age above 50 years. The introductory description instead places the vineyard at approximately 320 m, facing south, and describes the vines as more than 35 years old. The vines are Guyot-trained and planted at 4,500 vines per hectare.
Grapes
Nebbiolo.
Vinification
The grapes are harvested by hand in October. Fermentation and maceration take place in stainless-steel tanks for 22–30 days at a constant 28–30 °C.
Ageing
The wine matures for approximately three years in 20–40 hl Slavonian and French oak casks, followed by two months in stainless steel. It is bottled at the beginning of the fourth year after harvest and rests for at least six months in horizontally stored bottles.
