Vineyard and terroir
San Lorenzo is a hill in Verduno beside Monvigliero. It has the same soil type but lies slightly lower and is less steep. The 0.8-hectare vineyard faces south at 240–260 m. Its limestone and silty soils support Guyot-trained vines averaging approximately 30 years old, planted at 4,500 vines per hectare.
Grapes
Nebbiolo.
Vinification
The grapes are picked by hand in October. Fermentation and maceration take place in stainless-steel tanks for 22–30 days at a constant 28–30 °C.
Ageing
The wine matures for approximately three years in 20–40 hl Slavonian and French oak casks, followed by two months in stainless steel. Bottling occurs at the beginning of the fourth year after harvest, with at least six further months in horizontally stored bottles.
Tasting profile
San Lorenzo produces a fine, complex and balanced expression of Barolo with the floral character of Nebbiolo. The palate is elegant and harmonious, with tannins that are generally sweet and smooth.
Label / history
First produced in 1997. Its stated longevity is 15–30 years.
