Vineyard and terroir

The vineyards occupy south- and southwest-facing hillsides at elevations of 300–400 m a.s.l. Vines are trained to spurred cordon and Guyot.

Grapes

70% Sangiovese, 15% typical red grape from Montefalco and 15% other red grapes.

Vinification

Harvest begins with Sangiovese toward the end of September and concludes with the final variety in October; all grapes are picked by hand. Each variety is vinified separately. Fermentation occurs in contact with the skins, with maceration lasting approximately two to three weeks.

Ageing

After blending, the wine matures in large oak barrels for at least nine months. Static clarification follows in cement vats.

Technical data

The 2022 vintage has 14.5% alcohol. Formats comprise 375 mL and 750 mL bottles, a 1.5 L magnum in a wooden case and a 3 L double magnum in a wooden case. Contains sulfites.

Tasting profile

Ruby red in colour, with an intense, fruit-led bouquet of cherry and wild berries. The palate is dry, balanced and well structured. Sangiovese contributes freshness and makes the wine particularly approachable.

Serving and pairing

Serve at 16–18°C. Suitable partners include substantial first courses such as ravioli, risotto and tagliatelle, as well as red meat and mature cheeses. It is ready to drink but can continue developing in bottle for many years.

Vintage notes

The 2022 growing season was well balanced overall. Early summer was relatively cool and rainy, followed by warm, dry conditions that continued through October.

Label / history

First produced in 1979, this is a traditional Montefalco red based on Sangiovese and the area's characteristic red grape.
