Storia
Establishment in 1996
Borgo Salcetino was established in 1996 by Valneo and Tonino Livon. Both were already winemakers in Friuli, and the new estate extended their activity to the Chianti Classico territory, specifically Radda in Chianti.
Renewal of the estate
The property encompasses 30 hectares, half of which—15 hectares—are planted with vines. The vineyards subsequently underwent a gradual but comprehensive programme of renewal. This work addressed both planting density, brought to approximately 7,000 vines per hectare across the estate, and the composition and quality of the plant material. The native Sangiovese and Canaiolo plantings were complemented by experimental Merlot.
The winery and cellars were also extensively renovated. Technological improvements were introduced while the buildings retained their original local character. The estate’s underground maturation cellar houses the oak vessels used for Chianti Classico, Chianti Classico Riserva and Rossole.
Terroir
Borgo Salcetino is situated at Radda in Chianti, in Toscana’s Chianti Classico territory. Its setting is a distinctly hilly landscape with soils based on galestro schist. Differences in elevation across the hills generate marked temperature variation between day and night.
The vineyards identified with the locality of Lucarelli have soils composed of clay, silt and sand.
Vinificazione
The estate’s 15 hectares of vineyards underwent a gradual but comprehensive renewal focused on planting density and the quality and composition of the vines. The resulting estate density is approximately 7,000 vines per hectare; the documented Lucarelli vineyards are planted at 7,100 vines per hectare and trained to spurred cordon.
Sangiovese and Canaiolo form the native varietal base, supplemented by experimental Merlot plantings. Harvesting in the documented Lucarelli vineyards is undertaken entirely by hand, with the grapes collected in crates.
The winery and cellars underwent extensive technological renovation while preserving their original local character. An underground maturation cellar contains the oak vessels used for Chianti Classico, Chianti Classico Riserva and Rossole.
