Storia
1964: the first Collio holding
Livon began in 1964, when Dorino Livon acquired his first parcel in the hills of Collio. The purchase grew from a longstanding family attachment to Friuli and, in particular, to Collio, the northeastern borderland facing Eastern Europe. Dorino subsequently added further plots one at a time, gradually expanding the agricultural estate.
Early 1980s: the second generation
Dorino's two sons entered the family business in the early 1980s. Their arrival brought new ideas and strategies, with quality becoming the central priority.
1985: a new identity
From 1985, the quality-focused strategy was paired with a new visual identity: the Winged Woman created by Erté. The emblem became Livon's distinguishing trademark as the wines gained an international presence.
The 1990s: consolidation
The decade following the changes initiated during the 1980s was devoted to consolidating the direction already established: incremental growth, a stronger emphasis on quality, and the development of the Livon identity.
The present generation
Dorino Livon's grandchildren now continue the family enterprise. Their role represents continuity not only of family stewardship but also of the values and philosophy through which Livon developed its international profile.
Terroir
Livon's principal setting is Collio in Friuli Venezia Giulia, near the Slovenian border. The viticultural landscape lies at approximately 250 m above sea level and forms part of about 1,600 hectares of gently rolling, vineyard-covered hills.
The hills occupy land once covered by the sea. Their defining formation is flysch, composed of Eocene marl and sandstone. Vines penetrate deeply into these layered slopes. Site-specific descriptions also identify marl-and-clay soils around Ruttars and Dolegna del Collio, clay at Riul in Corno di Rosazzo, and Eocene marl at Tiare Blu.
Vinificazione
The individually documented Livon sites use Guyot training. Pinot Grigio, Sauvignon Blanc, Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon are identified among the plantings. Harvesting is performed by hand in the documented Livon parcels and bottlings connected with these sites.
The viticultural identity is rooted in Collio's native-variety tradition and in the gradual acquisition of separate hillside plots rather than the creation of a single contiguous holding.
Filosofia
Livon's identity is grounded in family continuity, attachment to Friuli, and a particular connection with Collio. Wine is treated as part of the region's longstanding culture and tradition, rather than solely as a product for consumption.
Quality became the central strategic priority when the second family generation entered the business in the early 1980s. The following decade consolidated that direction. The present generation continues the same family values and philosophy while carrying forward the identity developed since 1964.
