Storia
1398
The name "Chianti" appeared as a wine name thanks to the Mazzei family, marquises who have played an important role in Tuscan wine history.
2006
The Mazzei family acquired Il Caggio, a medieval hamlet surrounded by rolling hills planted with Sangiovese vines, after recognizing the potential of its terroir. Since that year, every Il Caggio vintage has been made to express the estate's distinctive character, ideal balance and strong personality. The winery is the Mazzei family's newest project.
Today, the family owns 470 ha of vineyards, also including Fonterutoli, Tenuta Belguardo and Zisola.
Terroir
Il Caggio is a medieval hamlet in a peaceful setting, surrounded by rolling hills planted with Sangiovese vines.
Vinificazione
Different clones and grapes from different vineyard plots are vinified separately using highly precise techniques to express the terroir as clearly as possible. Drawing on more than 600 years of experience growing Sangiovese, the Mazzei family launched an experimental organic program focused on the vines' immune system, using natural methods to strengthen their resistance. The program was introduced in the Il Caggio vineyards as part of the family's commitment to sustainable farming and the long-term stability of the ecosystem.
The winery combines a natural approach with modern methods. To bring out the terroir as clearly as possible, different clones and grapes from different vineyard plots are vinified separately using highly precise techniques.
Filosofia
The Mazzei family regards caring for the environment, respecting the land and advancing sustainable practices as priorities. They aim, since acquiring Il Caggio in 2006, to make every vintage express the estate's distinctive character, ideal balance and strong personality. The family describes its commitment to sustainable farming and the long-term stability of the ecosystem as central to the experimental organic program introduced in the Il Caggio vineyards.
