Vineyard and terroir

Il Picchio comes from its namesake 4.5-hectare vineyard in Greve in Chianti. The east- to southeast-facing site lies at 420–450 metres above sea level. The vines are trained to Guyot at a density of 6,500 plants per hectare.

Grapes

95% Sangiovese and 5% Colorino.

Vinification

Fermentation lasts approximately 15 days at 28°C.

Ageing

The wine matures for at least 30 months, including approximately 12 months in wood, followed by at least three months of refinement in bottle.

Technical data

Approximately 13.5% alcohol. Average production is 15,000 bottles. The first vintage was 1988.

Tasting profile

Intense ruby red. Floral and chocolate aromas are joined by herbal nuances. The palate has substantial body and leads into a long, persistent finish.

Serving and pairing

Pair with grilled meats, truffle, stews and aged cheese. The stated ageing potential is 20–25 years.
