Vineyard and terroir
Rocche di Castiglione lies in Castiglione Falletto, between the Villero and Rocche di Castiglione vineyards. It is Barolo’s smallest additional geographical designation (MGA), beginning at Castiglione Falletto Castle and extending into Monforte d’Alba. The steep site overlooks woodland at the foot of the hill and has a cool south-eastern exposure. Its soils are poor and particularly loose, with bedrock frequently reaching the surface.
Ageing
The wine matures for around three years: one year in barriques followed by two years in large barrels. It then rests for about another year in bottle.
Tasting profile
A refined, classic Barolo, with appealing simplicity, balance and restraint.
Label / history
The Castiglione Falletto winery was built in 1982 to vinify fruit from vineyards in the Barolo denomination. In 2000 it was expanded with a contemporary glass cube designed to contrast with, while remaining integrated into, the surrounding hills.
The Ceretto family began making wine in the 1930s, after Riccardo Ceretto moved to Alba. His sons Bruno and Marcello continued his work in the 1960s, adopting a new philosophy shaped by the period. Their efforts to promote Barolo earned them the nickname “Barolo Brothers.” The third generation now continues the family tradition. Ceretto owns nine estates and more than 80 hectares of vineyards, producing around 700,000 bottles annually; each estate follows its own production approach and style.
